Gardner Marsh Gas Up - September 2024 Newsletter - Tank Safety

In light of the flooding from recent storms that rolled through the Southeast region, now is a good time to review tank securement. I have had to deal with my fair share of flooding incidents, including floods in my own bulk plant. It is stressful for not only you and your staff, but your customer as well. Just like anything, a little extra time and preparation ahead of these situations goes a long way to reduce your exposure to negative customer experiences and liability.

It is extremely important to do your due diligence when preparing for a new tank installation. There are a lot of places where you find out about flood plains in the permit process, but many simple tank installs don’t require a permit. You need to know your risks ahead of that install. If you find yourself in a flood plain or in an area that poses a geographical risk and you have no other choice in tank location, spend the extra time and effort to make sure your asset remains in place.

NFPA 58 requires anchoring containers in areas where high flood waters are possible. You can use FEMA’s Flood Map Service Center website to determine your area’s flood risk. Once aware of the potential for flooding, you need to review your soil type to determine the proper size and type anchor that you should be using. I recommend you bookmark Minute Man Anchors onto your web browser. They are leaders in the industry and have soil charts right on their website for you to reference.

Another key feature of tank anchoring is that when PROPERLY anchored, your tank will not turn bottom side up. It is one thing to keep your tank tethered in place, and another to keep it in the proper position. A tank that turns bottom up is almost certain to break your gas line causing a hazardous liquid leak. A word to the wise on this is to attach your strapping to the legs or foot rings of the container and stay away from the lifting rings. Take the extra time to follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the system you are using to avoid hazardous situations. It could save someone’s life, possibly your own! Be safe and stay dry out there!

Product Spotlight

Gardner Marsh Gas Equipment carries a full line of Minute Man anchoring equipment. One particular product I want to highlight is the 2365 SLING. It is pre-made for 420# upright cylinders. It comes with a looped cable and two straps with protective sleeving already installed. You will also need the proper anchors for your soil type, some strapping for the foot ring and the 2010 BOLTS to attach the strapping to the anchors. This system will not only anchor your 420# in place, but also keep it from turning over in a flood or high wind situation.
